The life, loves and works of Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901) are told against the backdrop of Italian unification. The stirring, thinly-veiled patriotism of the great composer's operas frequently brought trouble from Austrian censors. In exchange, Verdi was extremely popular with his fellow Italians, though they did not hesitate to gossip about his affair with soprano Giuseppina Strepponi.
