Born in 1884 to a cultural but financially hard-pressed Jewish family in Leghorn, Amedeo begins painting early. At twenty he meets Utrillo and Picasso in Paris. He comes home a sculptor, but in poor health. Though highly regarded, he is plagued by a constant shortage of money. When success finally arrives, it is too late. Wasted by disease, Modì dies in January 1920.
