January 1944. British and American troops land in Anzio, a small seaside resort only sixty kilometres from Rome. The Allied objective is to break the stalemate at Cassino and to capture the Eternal City. The Germans, on the other hand, have mustered all troops available, from France to the Balkans, to push the invaders back into the sea. Four of these men have returned with us to the now peaceful countryside around Anzio where they left their youth, their comrades and their most painful memories.
