Sofia Loren ís mother, Romilda Villani, was offered a Hollywood tryout of her own, but her parents refused to let her leave Naples. Film producer Riccardo Scicolone gives Romilda two daughters, Sofi a and Maria, but nothing else. Not until Sofi a is a star, and
Riccardo deeply in debt, does he agree to recognise the second child, Maria, as his, doing so in return for money. Maria marries another womaniser: Romano Mussolini, son of the late Italian dictator.
But when Sofi a comes home with her Oscar for Two Women, and learns that Maria is pregnant, the news makes her happier than her own triumph.
