An English television director, recent widower, throws himself into job to repress pain. He's entrusted to make a documentary about theme of devil in Renaissance painting to Spoleto, in Italy. The director takes little daughter with him and finds accomodation in an ancient house inspiring him, perhaps too much. The oppressive atmosphere of the residence has deleterious consequences on psyche of all occupants.
